The neighbors of our old home were an old couple. They were living on the right side of our house and were quite busy in their life. The lady seemed to be very healthy and she looked younger than her age. Her husband was a smart man who was always would spend his evenings working in the garden or chatting with his wife while sitting leisurely on the lawn chairs.
We had just a formal hello, hi with them and we never visited them nor they ever visited us. Their life was a bit gloomy. They were always busy in their affairs and were not interested in much. We never heard them yelling at each other or quarreling. Their life was calm but they did not look quite happy.
However, one thing about them was strange. They did not like turning on more lights at night. It was their habit to turn off all the lights at home and turn on just one bulb of the place where they were sitting having dinner or doing something else. In case, they were watching TV or a movie, they would suffice with the screen brightness for them in the room and turn off that only bulb as well.
Why Did They Act So Weird?
Our explanation of their behavior was that they grew and lived in a home that had no electricity. In old times when small towns and villages were not supplied with electricity; people would light candles or oil lamps. The brightness of those illumination resources was dim. I think they were used to that dim yellow light of candles and oil lamps that they never liked turning on the bright LED lights in their home.
They Had a Stranger
But one day everything in their routine changed. They installed two bulbs on their front lawn and light them on every night. They also started keeping at least two rooms bright with electric lights on at night. The bright entrance gave a welcoming change to their home. They started spending some time out on the lawn during summer nights. They would put a lamp at their side while they would enjoy chatting in the cool breeze of night.
Some nights we would see a young girl with them talking and sharing normal activities at home. She was a smart happy girl who would not mind socializing. One day I met her on my way to the supper market. We talked and shared our intros. She was the daughter of the old couple and had come to stay with them for a while.
She brought great changes to their lives, especially the in-home setting and home illuminating. She would call me on some evenings to come our and share with her some light moments as we were both the same age and shared our interests also as young girls.
The Old Couple Changed
One day I met her with her mother outside our home on the street. I had come out to greet her and when I saw her mother I greeted her, too. The old woman was looking happy and cheerful. I wondered how much their daughter had added to their life. But, soon she traveled and they were again the same old couple in the home.
However, they were never the same as before. They started turning on the lights of their home more than ever before. The brightness made them feel cheerful. Now we would hear them talk and laugh on the lawn. The LED lights that their daughter chose for them became an inspiration to live a better life. Their moods changed and they looked quite happy.
One day I met the old woman again outside their home while I was collecting some mail from the box. She was the one who called me first and said, “Good Morning.”
She was happy to share that she has started going to a nearby coaching center to coach girls on making flowers. She new the skill for a long but now she feels she can do it to have some side income and enjoy her time connecting with other people.
I was glad but curious. I smiled and commented lightly, “You are quite different than long before today.”
“Yes, my life is illuminated now.”
“Long ago, I always thought turning on the lights outside the home is a waste of power.”
“I never thought that proper lighting can cheer me up so deeply!
“The brightness in the darkness of night can give you new ideas; it helps you feel how good is life and how wonderful is the world!”
